Johan Bilsen has a PhD in Social Health Sciences, a MSc in Medico-Social Health Sciences, and is a registered psychiatric nurse and psychotherapist. He is currently full professor of public health, mental health, epidemiology, and research methodology. He is head of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Research Group, head of the Research Cluster Public Health, and vice-head of Department of Public Health at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His main research interests are public mental health and wellbeing related topics such as burnout, suicide, sexual wellbeing, healthy lifestyle, terrorist attacks, and multiculturalism. Additionally, he is vice-president of the section Public Mental Health of the European Public Health Association, board member of the Belgian Association of Public Health and the World Federation of Mental Health. Before being appointed as professor of public health he worked in several outpatient as well as residential (mental) healthcare facilities as a nurse, head nurse, staff member and psychotherapist.
