Prof. Christian Schmahl, Head of Clinical Department at Central Institute of Mental Health, Germany
Christian Schmahl is Professor of Experimental Psychopathology and Medical Director of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany. His research focuses on mental health in adolescents and young adults as well as the interaction of neurobiology and psychotherapy. His presentation will address current mental health issues in adolescents, particularly self-injurious behavior and borderline personality disorder. Non-suicidal self-injurious behavior has a high prevalence in adolescence and social media appear to play a role in the dissemination of this type of behavior. State-of-the-art treatment programs for self-injurious behavior and adolescents with stress-related disorders will be delineated.
